Special Note For Donations

There seems to be some confusion regarding the DONATE link on John's blog for Project Warm Hearts. I asked John to clarify for you and this is what he had to say:

Down the page on the left you will find "Help us keep our server running by making a donation". Click here and you will be moved to a PayPal page. There is no need to note it is for the project. All donations until the end of the year will be going to Project Warm Hearts. Thank you for caring about the children of Ursulo Galvan.

So there you have it. Click away!

Caught My Eye

I took my Honda scooter out for a drive around the island the other day. Had to burn out some of the carbon! For whatever reason, these are some of the things that caught my eye.

This first one really made me mad. This road goes to a small little beach. Not really suitable for swimming but if offers a great view back to the downtown area. Somebody has now put up a fence to prevent people from accessing it. I did not know this area was private property. Sue, do you have any idea what is going on?

A resting spot in the shade is always welcome!

If you ever get a chance to stop here for the tikinxik, do so!

Can you imagine actually wanting to get into the water with a shark? Even a nurse shark.

This little refreshment stand was just sitting on a rock in the middle of nowhere. It must have been in storage. I have since seen it set up down by the malecon.

North Beach Now

I've gotten a few requests for updated pictures of North Beach. So here we go.

Approaching the beach from street in front of Maria del Mar.

Looking to your right.

And to the left.

The area right behind the above picture.

I'm not going to say much. I don't like this beach very much anymore. It is way too crowded with beds, chairs and umbrellas for my taste. There is hardly any sand left to lay a blanket down. And, since this is now a beach concession area leased by Maria del Mar, they yell at you for trespassing if you try to lie in the sand by those stupid beds. Just ignore them. I do.

Dig Deep

It's that time of year again. Time to start thinking about digging out those mittens and hats and all the other things you take for granted to keep you warm during the upcoming cold months.

But what if you had nothing to dig out? What if you had to tie a plastic bag around your head to keep the chill off your ears? Or you had no socks to cover your feet which you have shoved into a pair of ill fitting hand me down, holey shoes? Or no blanket to snuggle under?

Well, that's the scenerio many children in the mountainous areas of Mexico will be facing again this year. But you can help. You can help keep some of these children warm this year. Just like you did last year.

I, of course, am referring to Project Warm Hearts. The charity I started last year to provide warmth, comfort and maybe a few smiles to the children in a little village in the mountains of Veracruz. In the village of Xico.

These are some of the hats I was able to knit this year and get delivered for Christmas distribution.

Believe me, it wasn't easy getting these up to John and Anita in Xico. It took a trip down to Akumal with the hats and lots of other things that people have brought to the island for me to forward on to the children. These things were handed off to Kathy who generously went out of her way on a trip NOB to drop them off. The kindness of people continually amazes me and fills me with hope and joy.

One of last year's recipients.

Due to new laws regarding shipping, duty and customs of items within Mexico, I am not able to ship a single thing off to these children. Everything will have to be hand-delivered this year. It breaks my heart but I cannot change the law. Neither can you.

But you can help put a smile on faces like these.

This year I am asking all of you, everyone of my readers, to click on this link and go over to John's blog. There you will find a PAYPAL button. Go ahead and push it. Donate what you can. Every single dollar you donate will be used to purchase items of warmth, toys and goodies in order that these kids can experience a Christmas. And a warm and comfortable winter.

My heart goes out to these innocent, deserving kids. I hope yours does too.

Besides all of the contributions of hats, mittens, books and toys last year, you, my readers, donated $900!!!! I am so proud of all of you. So go ahead, donate today and make me even prouder this year. I know we can beat last year's amount.

Like last year, I will be publishing a personal thank you on Christmas day for all of your donations and help and total selflessness in this cause.

Sadly, this will be the last year that this charity will be able to function. Let's make it a good one!

NOTE: When you hit the DONATE button on John's blog, put Project Warm Hearts in the space. He'll then know that you are donating to charity and not to keeping his server running.

What Time Is It Anyway?

I'm not dealing well with the time set back this time around. Normally it doesn't bother me too much. But this time I feel like I have been discombobulatedized. Shut up. It is too a real word! But then, I often get asked what color the sky is in my world.

Take for instance bedtime. In the evening I usually read all my blog roll, while simultaneously watching TV and telling B to mute the darn thing when commercials come on. Then I move on to watching a few episodes of whatever TV program I have downloaded from the Net. But then I get hungry so I have to go scrounge around the kitchen and complain that there is nothing to eat. That conversation usually goes like this:

Me: Do you want something to eat?

B: No.

Me: I'm going to make some popcorn. Do you want any?

B: Maybe just a little.

I then make just a little extra and spend the next 20 minutes pulling his hand out of the bowl.

By then it is usually about 11:47 AM or so. I think to myself that I am getting to bed early tonight. After all, it's really 12:47 if you disregard that stupid clock set back thing. So off I trundle to bed. Only to toss and turn until 3:00 AM or longer, wondering why my stomach hurts.

I wake up around 7:15. Time to get out of bed because the sun is telling me that it is really 8:15 and I'm getting a late start. By this time the cats are fairly howling at the back door, wanting their breakfast. After all, to them I am an hour late filling their bowls. Or am I an hour early and they are just being pushy, knowing that I am up?

All I know for sure is that I am waking up at the wrong time, going to bed at the wrong time and getting hungry at the wrong time. Maybe by December I will have adjusted?

But I Have This Piece Of Paper!

Like the good and legal Citizen I try to be, I visited our local drivers' license bureau on October 9. My two drivers' licenses, car and motorcycle, were due to expire on October 10.

The procedure for renewing, while archaic to the nth degree, was not unpleasant at all. Friendly staff and nice service. She even slowed down while explaining things to me or asking questions. I really appreciate it when Spanish speaking people dummy down for me! The best part? I have never been required to take a driving or written test for either the original or the renewal.

As an aside, I think Mexico has one of the best things ever on drivers' licenses. They actually print your blood type on them. Great in an accident.

After I paid the appropriate fees to get both licenses renewed for two more years, I was told that they do not have any of the plastic cards for licenses. Echos of "No Hay" bounced in my head. But she did type a temporary license for me that was valid for seven days. That should be long enough for them to get a shipment of blank plastic cards in.

Fast forward the seven days. I return and am told the cards have not arrived yet. No big deal as I have the temporary permit. But, I point out to her, that has expired also and I certainly do not want to get into trouble with the Transito police for having no license. She was not pleased to have to do the work, but she typed me out another one. This one good for 10 days!

Fast forward 10 days, or until yesterday. Can you imagine my shock, my absolute total shock, when she proudly announced that the blank cards had arrived! While I was busy smiling at the thought of actually getting my licenses and not having to return there again, I almost missed what she said next. Unfortunately, they do not have ink to actually print the licences. But it has been ordered!

I am now the proud owner of another typed temporary license. Valid for 15 days.

Reverse Sunset

I was at Sergio's again last week for a sunset cocktail. Actually, a Sol cervesa but that is beside the point.

It was not a great sunset night. There weren't any clouds for the sun to hide behind and occassionally peek out at us. So I tried something different. A reverse sunset.

I turned around, since it was impossible to look at the setting sun, and saw how it was reflecting off the water up into the clouds. Cool.

Walk On A Wild Day

When I looked over at the ocean last Saturday, I couldn't believe my eyes. The surface of the ocean was smooth as glass and I could see every rock under the water. It was amazing. I have never seen the water that clear before. Skip to Sunday.

This is what I saw when I looked, just 24 hours later.

I took a walk over there Monday afternoon to get some closer pics. We can thank the cool weather and the upset ocean that we are having on two things: trailings from Hurricane Rick over in the Pacific and the last norte that has blown in.

I don't know if this a collection somebody was going to pick up later or maybe something a little more Satanic.

As usual, because of the rock barrier we have, the waves broke out from shore.

The beach across from house is not all that good for shelling. Sure, there a few little ones to be found, but mostly it is this. Rocks and petrified conch shells.

As I turned to leave the beach, the oncoming sunset caught my eye. It was reflected behind my house and that of my neighbors.

Believe it or not, these pictures were all taken in color. It was just that overcast out Monday afternoon.

A Touch Of Brightness

After the posts of the past two days, I thought we could all use something cheerful.

These blooms got my attention while riding my scooter the other day. Enjoy!

Day From Hell - Part 2

I returned the next morning as promised with my faithful intrepator, A, in tow. His English is at 99% and his Spanish is 100% so I was set!

As I approached the mechanic, he greeted me warmly and asked what was up. Evidently all traces of the conversation the day before erased from his memory banks. I told him I was there to discuss the car window. He immediately called the body guy over who, incidently, had headed to the back of the shop when he saw me. So he trudges over and says "What!".

Long story short. Not only would he not admit to ever even touching the window, let alone somehow breaking it, he refused to even look at it! By this time I was really frustrated and the window had long since fallen inside the door panel. I could not even secure the car if I couldn't get the window rolled up. When told this, he basically said it was not his problem. I'm not sure what all she said because A would not translate it for me. I could tell from the tone that it was not too nice though. So I said, ok, hasta luego, and we left. Never to return or set foot in that place again. Even though the mechanic probably had nothing to do with it, it was still his employee and he was condoning the behaviour. Besides, I am positive that the car was being sabotaged each time so that I would have to return to get yet something else fixed.

I remembered seeing an ad for another mechanic posted at the licensing bureau when I renewed my drivers licenses last week. I drove over, wrote down the information and off we headed to this shop.

Those guys couldn't have been nicer. They said they could look at it right away. I explained that I had to drive A to work but would return immediately. They offered to take him to work on their motorscooter so that they could get right to work on the car. We declined and I did then return within 20 minutes.

Two hours later I had new inner workings for the window, it rolled up and down with ease AND the door speakers got hooked up. Evidently somebody had disconnected them when they fixed the door handle for me a few weeks back. Same person who didn't break the window handle.

So it looks like I may have found a decent replacement for my former mechanic. I'll know better next time something goes wrong and I go to him to fix it.

Day From Hell

Last Friday was truly a day from Hell for me. It was also a sad day in that I lost something very important to me. My mechanic. Even though he did nothing wrong.

I have no complaints with my mechanic. I think he does a very good job with my car and I trust him. They body guy who works for him, not so much. I've also noticed the last few times I have had my car in for whatever, the prices have started to climb. Enough that I am starting to feel that I am being Gringoized. Something I really, really hate. It used to be that when I picked my car up, it felt brand new and almost purred in its' performance. I was very satisfied each and every time. I now am convinced that I am being sabotaged. For example....

I recently had some starter problems. Nothing else was wrong. When I went to pick the car up, I was told that there had been a short in the wiring and as a result, the whole exhaust system had to be removed! The wiring for the starter runs all the way under the car to the back where the muffler is? I admit I know little about cars but this struck me as very strange. To top it off, about half way home all Hell broke loose under there. It sounded like things had not been put back correctly or tightly enough. Lots and lots of rattling.

I took the car back and explained that evidently things had not been put back together correctly and something needed to be fixed under there. They then told me that the brackets they put back on were so rusted, they needed to be replaced. At my cost, of course. The question I did not ask was why did they put rusted brackets back on that they knew were not going to stay on? Why not call me and tell me and get permission to put new ones on right then?

I took the car back and the brackets were replaced. Now for the strange part and the part that made me swear to never go back there. Remember though, I am talking about work done by the body guy now, not the mecanic. Putting on the brackets was the body guy's job.

When I dropped the car off, I left all the windows down. I usually do this because otherwise the interior would get too hot. As I approached my car, I noticed that only the drivers side window was up. Well, almost up. It was about 5 inches open. I also noticed hand smears and finger prints all over the window. I went to roll the window down and got nothing. The handle just spun in my hand! I called the mechanic over and asked what had happened to the window. He said I would have to ask the body guy. He called him to come over to where we were. I knew it was not going to be pretty by his body language and facial expression as he stormed across the lot towards us.

He, of course, denied ever touching the window and had no idea why it wasn't working. Yeah, right. I asked who had put the window up in the first place and whose fingerprints were all over it. He just stared at me, not replying at all. Short version, I said I was too angry to continue the conversation and I would return the next day with an interpretor so we could be sure we were communicating correctly with each other. "Fine", he said and stomped off.

to be continued....

Poll Results

Well, the poll has closed and the results are in. I was glad to see that so many of you agreed with me. There were some very good points made in the Comments section from those of you who didn't agree with me.

A whopping 84% of you didn't like being hassled by waiters and streets vendor either. The results for Dislike and No Opinon were so small that they didn't even show up as a percentage. Thirty-three of you voted in that category.

Even though I don't like being hassled, I have grown tolerant of it. I realize that this guys (and gals) are only doing their job and trying to make a living. If they need to act like carnival barkers in order to achieve that, then so be it.

My Buddy

Simon is approaching his 3rd birthday. He mostly gives me great joy. But there are times! My other cat is really old and a fussy eater. Not Simon. If it smells like food, looks like food and is on his plate, he'll eat it.

Wherever I am, Simon will either be close by, on my lap or rubbing against me, begging to have his cheeks rubbed. I consider myself to be mostly a dog person, but I wouldn't trade my Simon boy for anything!

Asking to have his cheeks rubbed.

Leaning against my leg for security.

If he's not on my lap, he's always right at my feet.

Sometimes he totally forgets I'm alive though! Zonked out in his favorite position!

Protection?

These baskets filled with rocks run the entire length of the malecon downtown. They are supposed to disperse the energy of incoming waves, especially during a hurricane.
Hopefully they will not get put to the test anytime soon!

Take The Poll

I've put a polll up over in the sidebar. Please take a second to pick an answer.

I hate it when I walk down the street past the restaurants and waiters or people hired specifically for the purpose try to stop you. They are, of course, trying to get you to eat at their place.

Even worse is when you stop to read a menu and you are accosted and the waiter either trys to explain everything on the menu to you or, shudder, actually starts reading the thing out loud to you! Most of the time this turns me off so badly I just walk away from the restaurant.

I'm a somewhat intelligent, literate adult. I can make up my own mind where I may want to eat and I can certainly read a menu without any outside interference.

So what do you think?

You Know You Have To Have One!

I bring you this post today with great joy. It's about my friend Kelly. Or should I say Talented Kelly? She lives in Arizona and occasionally here on Isla. Right down the street from me actually.

Kelly has an amazing talent and eye. She makes jewelry. Mostly southwest inspired pieces, but all truly inspired and inspiring. I was recently browsing her Etsy page and came across this beauty:

The chain is sterling silver, the calla lilly is Thai Hill Silver and it is loaded with citron, garnets, turmeline and some other semi-precious stone whose name escapes me now. Christmas and another friend who shall remain nameless immediately came to mind. (the name does not start with an L or a K!) I had to have it. I used the convenient PayPal button and Kelly graciously agreed to bring it down to me in time for Christmas. Which she did last week!

Each of her pieces has a clasp that is unique in its' own right. I love the one she used on this piece.

Talk about work! Look at this. Each one of this beads is handset onto the necklace chain. I would go blind trying to do that!

I stole a few pictures from her Etsy page, where she has these beauties up for sale. And, dare I say it, for waaaaay too cheap! Really, you can't not buy something.

If you click on over to her site, you will find these and many more exquisite pieces. And, of course, a description and story about each one. So go on. Christmas is coming. Make somebody you love happy and go visit Kelly here.

Tired Of Sunsets Yet?

I know I'm not. Each one is so totally different. My challenge, then, is to make them as interesting for you to look at as they are for me in person. So here's my latest attempt not to bore you silly.

We went down to Sergio's Playa Sol on Monday night. There were storm clouds building over the ocean so I thought it would be a good sunset.

I love that somebody set up this chair under the "palm". To catch some shade or to watch sunsets? Who knows.

oooh. Aren't I just artsy-fartsy! A shot through that little palm to the beach area.

Here's a shot back into Sergio's showing the throngs of people that are currently on the island.

One lonely fisherperson on the dock.

Ok, here come the fancy sunset pictures.

Only two other people waiting for the sun to go down.

Those are posts in the water, not people.

I never tire of taking pictures with this old fish scale in them. I think it is great with the sunset in the background.

While the sun was setting in the west, I turned around and looked at the eastern sky. Can you see the rainbow?
