Tourist Police Revisted

I had to laugh the other day. There was an article in our local paper, Por Esto, that kind of firmed up in my mind what I think about them. They usually work the streets in pairs.

It seems that one pair of TP stopped a Candian woman who was driving her golf cart the wrong way on a one way street downtown. One of them told her she could pay her "fine" of 500 pesos directly to him on the spot. Which she gladly did. However, the partner, in his infinite wisdom, gave her a ticket anyway! (can you guess what is coming?)

The tourist was around long enough to actually show up in court. She complained that she had already paid her "fine" and that should be the end of it. The Judge ascertained that she was correct about paying, but that it was not a "fine". The end result was that both officers were fired on the spot. One for soliciting a bribe, the other for not reporting him.

Moral: If you are going to solicite and accept a bribe, don't give the person a ticket anyway!

Nice to see justice prevail! I'm guessing his 500 pesos was his only severance?

Nice story :). Wonder what they will do now to support themselves.

This has been happening for years on 307. At Hidden Worlds, we talked with two young Canadian women who had just been stopped while driving a rag top rental jeep. original 'fine' was 1000 pesos. They said they were leaving the next day & didn't have that much money-ended up bargaining 'fine' down to 200 pesos.

What's amazing to me about this incident, Wayne, is that the cops were disciplined. In other places, the brass are in on the racket. With corruption top to bottom, there's little chance of ending it. I'm encouraged to hear that authorities in Isla Mujeres are doing something about it.

An Oregon attorney had a similar experience. He represented a hooker and took his fee in services rendered. He was disciplined by the bar for having sex with a client. But how did the bar discover the transgression? The idiot attorney billed the client in addition to her other services, and she complained about the bill. Maybe the attorney and the cop couild set up their own little scam.

Not seen too much of the TP just a few timesr on the beach. But watch the police stopping checking for DUI as you leave town on the bay road.
