He'll probably kill me, but....

I so admire people with talent. I wouldn't say that I'm a totally untalented klutz, but I don't shine in any one area. Not like my friend, R from Toronto, does. He is a true artist. In fact, he used to make a living just from selling his paintings. He's that good. He gave that up and in later years joined the rat race like the rest of us. He got to retire early last year and now has time to pursue his love of art full time.

One thing you have to understand about R. He is a curmudgeon. A lovable one though. Oh he grrs and growls and threatens to get a table for one all the time, but he doesn't really mean it. I love it when he comes down to the island to visit every winter. I have a very quick wit, but nothing compared to his brilliant mind and tongue!

He does have a strange obsession with skeletons and skulls though. In fact, he makes them. Skulls that is. We have a great time while he is here, finding raw material to use on them. Especially during Karneval. "Look! Somebody lost a feather!" Bend and snatch. "Look! Beads and sequins!" Bend and snatch. "Look! Oh, ick, nevermind!" You get the idea. We collect street treasures.

He recently sent me the following the picture. (so that makes it mine and I can do whatever I want with it!) He is going to be doing a one-man show in Toronto of his skulls. He reports that he has 70 done but needs 100. He better get busy!

This is one picture you will want to click on to enlarge. Notice the unusual things he uses. I especially like the arrows that pierce the entire skull. And the clothespin teeth. And the plastic fake fingernails for teeth. And......

I can't wait to read the comments on this one!

Neat. What does he make the skulls out of? Papier Mache? Would be a fun exhibition to go to.

Years ago I would have found the skulls macabre. After spending several Days of the Dead here, I find them playful and even sort of comforting. Go figure.

I'm not sure what he makes them out it. I think paper mache but I wouldn't swear to it. If he reads this, maybe he can tell us. I wouldn't doubt that it was some strange substance though!
