We currently have, in my opinion, the best Mayor this island has ever seen. I believe it is also the island's first female Mayor. They call her President though in Spanish. She made a few mistakes in the beginning, angering a lot of business people. But she learned quickly. I really felt sorry for her because just after taking office she had to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. To my knowledge, which is admittedly little, she did not pocket any of the government assistance money but used it all for the betterment of the island. All of our roads have been repaved, she has built new community centers and many other good things. One of the best things she has done is to undertake cleaning up the island and is trying to educate people about not littering.
So here's my bitch. The island is looking better than I have ever seen it and I have either been visiting here or living here for a total of 17 years now. And then come the tourists. Not just any tourist mind you, but the national tourists. Or Mexicans if you will. Those of you who read this blog know that I love living in Mexican and have the highest respect for the people here. Except for one group of national tourists. The ones from Mexico City.
They are rude, arrogant, demanding, dirty and cheap. The beaches where they congregate are a mess. Food containers, chip wrappers, candy wrappers, plastic bottles and whatever they no longer have a use for are just careless thrown down. In some instances, they have only to walk 10 feet to get to a garbage container! Who do they think is going to clean this up? Do they act like this at home? If so, they must all live in pig stys. Their behavior in public places is shameful. They treat the local people, and other tourists, like shit.
I'll be so glad when this week is over and they all get on the car ferry (because the passenger fare is only 15 pesos!) and go home! Maybe the island can get back to its' formal relaxing, and now cleaner, self.
Ok, rant over. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Well, to be true: I`ve never seen another country with such a high "plastics-and-cans-per-meter- of-street" rate.
Even somewhere in deepest Chiapas or at lonesome streets somewhere in Est. Puebla: Waste all along the streets... :-(
