Sunday I was at our town park here in Michigan. They have wifi and it is really nice to sit outdoors on the computer. I shut my laptop down as normal and headed for home. Once there, I set my laptop up to do my weekly posting for this blog. Guess what? Nothing happened.
I tried everything I could think of. Even went to the website of my laptop's maker and followed their directions for fixing a computer that won't turn on. Still nothing.
Following the advice of my trusted brother, yesterday I took it to the local repairman. He turned it over and opened up the back. After just staring at it for a bit, he turned to me and said, "What did you do to this thing?"
I guess he had never seen rust inside a laptop before. Or at least not that much. I explained that where I live, that is an evil by-product that happens to anything metal. In a short time too.
With a rusted out mother board and memory card, I had no choice but to turn it in for recycling and purchase a new one. He was able to transfer all of my data to this new computer. Something I have never had the opportunity to do with my old laptops.
I just hope that Rusty gets on his horse and stays the heck out of town!

Afraid to look into my laptop - it just keeps working so I avoid checking for 'potential' problems - but I am pretty sure mine has seen moisture - what is a beach person to do?
Sorry for the demise of your laptop. I recently got mine back from HP. I started buying mine at Costco here in the U.S. because they automatically give a 2-year warranty and really good tech support. (Someone usually answers immediately so I'm not on hold with some guy I won't be able to understand. It's amazing!) This one now has a new lease on life with a brand-new battery and overheating repairs. We'll see how long it lasts!
What a nuisance. Glad you could at least save your data!
I have a fan on my laptop all the time and take it in to the air conditioning with me at night during the summer. But our local tech guy says that when you turn it off, the humidity in the air condenses on the parts so you'd be better off leaving it on... I haven't wanted to do that since a laptop might overheat, but I think he has a point...
Good luck with your new one!
As you know, this is one of those experiences we have had in common. My last purchase is holding up well. Maybe because I live four blocks from the beach these days.
My old laptop overheats if you turn it on. I need to find a place that will take the date out and trade it in. I should take Pablo's rusty old computer and see if we could wheel and deal two laptops. I miss having the luxury of taking the computer with me when I go somewhere....well, you know, like the pool. Since I don't go anywhere!
