A Different Form Of Transportation

Something new to the community since I was a lad, is the influx of Amish. Of course, they do not use motorized vehicles to get around. It is not uncommon to see this site all around town.

Most people do not mind that they have to deal with horse drawn vehicles in traffic, at least not now that state law requires the Amish to display the orange "slow" vehicle sign. What they do mind is that they are not required to, nor do they voluntarily use, the poop baskets attached to their horses. It is not uncommon to see piles of horse manure in the Walmart or local grocery store parking lots.

I see a lot of horses exhibiting this behavior. It usually means that the horse has a sore mouth or that the bit doesn't fit correctly. That's all I'm gonna say.

Interesting point about the bit - the horse looks to be thin as well ;-0

Having lived and worked with the Amish most of my life, I can say they are like us, a few evil ones and a great many good ones.

On the treatment of horses: we saved a pair of draft horses from a flood a few years ago. The sawmill was located in a swamp, we had a gully washer and the water came up fast. We had to cut the horses free with wire cutters from where they were caught up in the barbed wire while trying to swim free of their pen. We took them to a safe place and had a long talk with the owner before we would let him have them back.

There's been an influx of Amish or Mennonites, not sure which, into my little hometown in southeast Kansas. They have a farmer's market at the little park one morning a week and I've heard the baked goods are to die for! That horse does look like he's in pain.

There are several Amish communities in Central Ontario. Last year there was quite an uproar about their puppy mills. Apparently dogs are regarded as a crop. I was shocked to learn this.
