Yum.....or Dumb?

Now I ask you, what self respecting person could visit Merida in the state of the Yucatan, without gobbling up some of these? Outside of the Yucatan, the only other place I have seen them for sale is Costa Rica.

For you newbies, or forgetful ones, these are salchipapas. Deep fried pieces of cheap hot dogs served with piping hot french fries. A true delicacy in my book!

I'm kicking myself for not trying them when we were there last month. I saw them all over the square but always found something else to sample. Next time!

I may not be a super self-respecting person (self confidence issues) but I find this dish to be as repulsive as SPAM BOMBS.

I actually ordered this at Carnaval once, but COLD fries and COLD fried hot dogs....uh, just didn't cut it for me. Plus I don't like ketchup.

Hey I have an idea, you can make thse at home! Here's the recipe: Cut food-product FUD dogs in half, deep fry in old used lard; when crunchy, remove and throw in frozen fries. Remove fries before they are heated all the way through. Delicious! Can't mess it up!
Want the recipe for Spam Bombs?

I'd eat the fries, but not sure about the hotdog! More for you, Wayne!

I love salchipapas! I didn't discover it while I was in Mexico...my husband is Peruvian and it's also very known in this country, although a bit different than the one shown above. They serve it with hot dogs too, and they put an egg on top, with homemade mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce with lemon. I'm sure you'd love it too!

Bon appétit!

So good for your health .. NOT.

Uhhhh....of course, there's no chance that eating this kinda crap could have contributed to your most recent health concerns, .....right?

Dear IG,
Salchipapas look delicious, if slightly deadly. The Isla.net Chatter Board is organizing a cookbook to benefit La Gloria English school--maybe this would make a good entry?

Looks like a heart attack in waiting to me amigo!

We have been really frightened off by the cooking oil in many a deep fryer around here.

They never change the oil - just keep adding to it as it boils off - disturbingly black.

We have taken to using our DeLonghi deep fryer - where we can change the oil often and enjoy clean cooked results - although no hot dog parts here - I know, parts are parts.

I am on the fence on salchipapas. I love the way they smell, I really like the french fries but the hot dogs are just okay. Which is funny because I always claim that I will eat anything if you deep fry it.
Maybe if I made them with good hot dogs?? (LOL Husband says you can't put good and hotdogs in the same sentence)...
regards,
Theresa

Here in Jalisco, they are called "Salchi-pulpos". My kiddies love them! Sundays in El Jardin aren't complete without an order of Salchipulpo. :)

Believe it or not, I once worked at an inner city hospital in Maasachusetts, about 25 years ago, that served these as an entree on occasion! They called them frank kabobs. I was never brave enough to try them. Who knows if the chef was from Merida!?

Ack! I got confused and posted my comment on the wrong post.

I didn't think they had these anywhere else, but we have them in Mazatlan, too. Except they wrap the hot dogs in tortillas before they slice and fry them. Yum! and kinda gross. But mostly yum. ;)
