The Federal District of Mexico, more commonly known as Mexico City, recently became the first place in Mexico to recognize and conduct same sex marriages. Evidently the ramifications of this are starting to trickle down.
Our local paper recently reported that Isla Mujeres has joined forces with the National Tourist Board to start actively promoting our island as a honeymoon destination for same sex couples.
But don't mistake this action as being done because it is the right thing to do. The number one reason they are doing it is to "attract this segment of high income spending tourists."
Maybe I should run a Honeymoon Special for my cabana.

In this day and age of ridiculous governing, compliance to reality for any reason is good enough amigo.
Sounds like a good idea. That is, if they don't steal your copper pipes and you can provide your guests with running water! Didn't they recently break in and steal all of your power tools?? For all the HORRIBLE posts you talk about on that island, why do you stay????????
I understand Merida Mikey's statements..and even as a frequent visitor to Isla who experienced my own "horrible" loss last year...I also understand the reason why you remain on "that island"..It is truly a wonderful place with many equally wonderful people..Theft and other issues happen daily around the world...Probably in Merida too....No offence to Mikey.
I DO think you should run a honeymoon special for the cabaƱa, in a periodical in DF where the new legal couples are ready to celebrate at the NTB destination(isla), or online on one of the Mexican sites like anunciosya. I think you should run with it. Regardless whether you approve of the reason and the way all this went down, and is going down, the fact is, it is going down! Don't lose sight of that. I am shocked and amazed and pleased that Mexico is allowing "such a thing!" in this backwards, Catholic, somewhat closed minded country....speaking of the people who run it, not all the people IN it. Be Mexican, look at the bright side and forget about the dark side.
We all know that gays are desirable guests, tourists, visitors, people, seem to be a sensitive lot, to the locals as well as to the environment. I think it is great thing. I would welcome them with open arms, then get them full of cocktails and get the inside scoop of how this went down in the big DF.
I have to overlook the political bullshit around it and try to see the positive side.
Absolutely you should advertize. Why not make some extra cash!
As for Merida Mikey .. crime is in every city .. and Isla is a beautiful place to live.
Dear Merida Mikey, Wayne still lives on Isla because, not only is it beautiful, it's his home.
You have every right to be on a soapbox on this issue my friend! This is a very positive step in the right direction for Mexico.
I think it would be great to advertise Isla as a destination for same sex honeymoons! Your cabana would become very popular...
