Fall In The Summer

A few weeks ago the first sweet corn of the season was offered for sale at one of the local farms. We took a drive out there and bought a couple of dozen. It was great to eat fresh American sweet corn again, but I think the people selling it jumped the gun a bit.

While there, I noticed that they had guords for sale. Interesting things, guords.

Bird house guords are pretty neat especially if they are painted and all decorated! Our sweet corn isn't quite ready yet, but boy I can't wait to go out in the gardent and pick it.

What does one do with a guord. Do you eat them?

Yes gourds are interesting. They come in so many shapes and can be used for serving dishes, cups, musical instruments and who knows what all else.

for primitive lovers, you just dry them, scrub them up to clean, and display them in big wooden bowls or trenchers. There are also little tiny ones that are cute strung as garlands. They also make great birdhouse. Can be painted or scrimshawed. I grew some last year. I discovered they are pollinated by huge moths and I was getting them in my house all summer. Ewww! :o/
