Any Suggestions?

Let's suppose just for one minute that I might want to go on a mini trip this month. Since my big trip had to be cancelled, I am considering maybe something on a smaller scale.

About the only major city in Mexico that I have not yet explored is the capitol, Mexico City.

So, my questions to you that have been there or know the city:

What should be on my "must see" list?

What should be on my "must do" list?

Fire away!

Cuidad Mexico, DF???? Wow! To me, that would be like jumping from the frying pan (Isla) into the fire!

More crime there than at your house!

Hmmm.....Mexico City is crazy but there is so much to do- take in a show at the Bellas Artes....go to Chapultepec Park or the shrine of Guadalupe...go to the Museum [can't remember the full name but it is huge]....take in an afternoon riding on a boat in the canals of Xochimilco....or head a little further south to Cuernavaca- it's gotten much bigger since I lived there with a family while I was in language school but great big market and lots of gardens. And 1/2 hour outside- the town of Tepoztlan [Famous subject of a book by Lewis Sinclair]. Tepoztlan is magical....love your blog!Sandia

I have not been there but I do know that there are some wonderful museums in Mexico City. I really miss museums living here. And of course---- FOOD- always for me- FOOD. Have a great time.

A quick look at Gary Denness's Mexile blog should fill your dance card tout de suite.

Don't they have the robe that Juan Diego wore when he saw the Virgin de Guadalupe? I would try to make a point to see it.

Wayne, I think I'd be real careful about traveling to a place where kidnappings and murders of Gringos are as prevalent.

Call me a wus, but things are weird down there lately ...

How 'bout Belize..????

I gave you all my tips on Facebook, I hope you have a great time! Paul tells me to tell you to stay at the Red Tree House - Billie just stayed there on her last trip to DF and we wanted to stay there but they were full last time we went.

Saludos

Try Tlalpan..supposedly the oldest part of town is nice (trees, little local places and parks) and can be walked..

If you appreciate Diego Rivera, the National Palace, The Secondary Education Building, and the Dominical on the west side of the Alameda are a must. Get some information on the metro before you go. It's easy to use and cheap.

the best part...the downtown zocalo. and esp. the Diego Rivera murals upstairs in the government bldg there
don't miss those!

nearby is a fine Hostel. clean, nice

As someone mentioned, several trips would be necessary to take in the main attractions.

A change from the more traditional tourist attractions, might be a visit inside the 4-5 story Monte de Piedad (national pawnshop) near the zocalo, as well as the two main mercados en el centro, La Merced and Sonora, the latter with a focus on herbals, curandero and bruja/brujo stuff.

An easy half day trip (using metro combined with local buses) would be a visit to either:the Teotihuacan ruins or the Templo San Franciso Javier (Jesuit) in the small town of Tepotztlan, north of DF. This church houses absolutely incredible colonial art and elaborate carved altars and statues.

For some relaxation, refreshment and people watching, try a bench in the lovely shaded "Alameda" or any of the outside restaurants beneath the colonaded buildings that front the zocalo.

Oh, the Museo Franz Mayer, houses decorative art (silver, furniture & textiles).

Happy Travels!

Two places we liked were the Anthropological Museum in Chapultepec Park, and the Palacio Nacional on the Zocalo. Plan to spend at least a full day at each because they are huge. The Anthro Museum has fantastic displays from all the pre-hispanic cultures of Mexico. The Palacio Museum has the great wall mural of Diego Rivera, as well as a huge number of rooms and museums and courtyards. ¡Buena suerte!
