If any of you follow my infrequently updated travel blog, you will know that in May/June of 2007 we drove our car on a trip all over Mexico. We spent several weeks just exploring our way down the Pacific Coast from Los Mochis to Arriaga. We stopped at all the hotspots; Acapulco, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Puerto Escondido, to name a few. But there was one spot where we spent three very enjoyable days and we decided that if we ever wanted to take another vacation inside Mexico, it would be back to that wonderful place. So where is it?
The area itself is known as the Bays of Huatulco. It is comprised of the two small communities, La Crucecita and Santa Cruz. It is an expanse of nine bays running along the Pacific Coast of the state of Oaxaca. By car, it is 8 hours south of Oaxaca City and 2 hours south of Puerto Escondido. If fact, one of the beaches is very famous as having been featured as the mystery beach in the movie, Y tu Mama, Tambien.
Here's the view of one of the bays from a roadside viewing space.
Here's the view from my balcony in "downtown" La Crucecita. I loved looking out to the mountains each day.
In the following days, I'll be leaving Isla Mujeres behind for a bit and take you exploring with me. We'll visit downtown, the beaches, look at the archetecture and learn a little about this fast growing area.
But first, let's take a look at Cancun from the air as we leave it behind.
From the airport, almost all domestic planes head out over the Caribbean and then turn back inland. Here you see one stretch of the infamous Hotel Zone.
Passing back onto the mainland.

Great shots, Wayne. When we left Cancun last week, we had a perfect view of Isla & I grabbed my camera only to get the dreaded change batteries message! By the time I did, we were out of range!
Oh goody! I can't wait to read all about it. Huatulco is on the top of our must see places! Have to wait for the last kid to graduate from high school so we have time to do that without using up our "Isla time".
Waiting anxiously for more!
Yea! I'm looking forward to it amigo! I love living vicariously through other peoples adventures :)
Awesome pics!!
Hubby and I are actually planning a trip to Huatulco for my stepmoms 50th!!Should be good times from what I've read at Int'l Living!
Terrific photos hombre - looking forward to the travelogue!
Great departing shots Wayne! I've only gotten decent photos from the plane once. Can't wait to hear more about your destination!
OMG! How freakin' ugly is that hotel that looks like a giant 6pack of Coors?
We're heading for Hualtulco too! Probably by van, after taking the boat to Barra de Navidad. I'll be sure to catch your blogs so I'll know all about it when we get there.
Yippee, a vicarious vacation via Wayne!
I actually thought about going to Huatulco maybe 7 or 8 years ago but it was almost impossible to get there from Portland. I look forward to seeing more photos and reading about your impressions of the area.
Well, you sneaky little devil you! And here I thought you were mad at me or something cause you haven't commented on the blog in so long..........
Have fun!
