Need A Room?

I just read where once all this building boom of condos and giant hotels is over, there will be a total of 2303 rooms available for rent on Isla! This probably does not count the multitude of houses that rent rooms or the entire house.

So my question is: Who is going to rent all these rooms? Especially since we no longer have the long, luxurious beaches and Ave Hidalgo being closed for the entire high season.

I don't want to even think about the increase in golf cart traffic.

That's been my big question ever since the building boom started. It'll be interesting to hear reports of high season numbers this year with the current state of the world economy and the negative factors on the island. We were on Isla in May. My husband hadn't been for two years. Sad to say, but he was absolutely shocked by the traffic, condition of Playa Norte, etc...

That's a huge number! Hopefully, at least some of the people that stay at the bigger resorts won't leave the resort! They will be missing alot.....

Say it ain't so....Hidalgo closed for the entire season? Will resturants not be open? That was one of my favorite pass times, just wondering the street, mingling. Just got tickets...should we not go to our favorite spot this year? We've been going the last 12 years, and are sad about the changes...thinking we should find a new island.

Wayne -- You once commented on the number of registered vehicles on the island. How many did you say there were? It sounded as if the number would constitue eternal gridlock.

Wayne...1st post..found you on jamqueen's blog...Can not help but wonder if all of these recent issues are connected? Seems like the small Ind.Rest.,Beach clubs and Apt. owners are being hurt by
the action's of a few. I cannot help but wonder who benefits?

It’s not the Isla I first met in 1993. Take a look at the Mundaca realty website to see even more planned, very upscale development.

When you mention these 2,303 rooms on Isla Mujeres is it possible that that figure includes the mainland section which is officially part of Isla? --- Please tell me "Yes"!!

beck: the papers here are full of doom about high season. nobody expects it to be "high" at all.

jamqueen: my fear exactly. I doubt that most of the high priced people will leave their little compounds. Thus depriving the local tourist community and cheating themselves out of really enjoying Isla.

anonymous: yours is a difficult question for me to answer. Hidalgo is currently not closed but they are still saying November. I guess I would say you should come on down but this time look around and ask yourself if you ever want to come back. Despite my occasionally grumblings, it still is a beautiful island.

Steve: the last official count in Jan 2008 had the number of golf carts at 453. I think a few more have joined the ranks since then! The entire post was on Jan 25, 2008. Remember though, their is a continental zone on the mainland and the figures include this area also. For instance, there are a total of 432 taxis but 100 or so of them operate on the mainland.

couzin frank: welcome to the blog! Good questions and I certainly don't have the answers. I have my opinions but since this blog is monitored by the powers on Isla, I'll just keep them to myself.

jackie: thanks but I'll pass on the Mundaca site. It is too scary.

anonymous: the report did not say but I highly doubt that there are any rooms over there. It is not a tourist destination at all and many people are not even aware that it exists. There might be a few but it would be an insignificant number. Sorry.

WOW !!!! I though that Hildago closing was just a far off plan that would never really happen. I don't like to drive anything anywhere on vacation. One of the reasons I love Isla is the only transportation you we need is a pair of flip-flops.
