Oil Tanker?
When we were visiting Heather in Playa del Carmen recently, we looked out to sea and saw this ship passing by.
I was surprised by how close to shore it seemed. We just don't see this kind of water traffic on Isla Mujeres.
It looks like an oil tanker to me, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Looks like a big tanker to me. Let's hope we never have to look at them off the coast of Isla!!

Definitely an oil tanker - I think I have seen that very ship in port in Veracruz.
But why does it have such a big-size loading crane? On an oil tanker? For what?
Or is that framework construction something else?
What’s amazing to me is how huge those ships are. Portland has a large shipping industry. The ships come down the Columbia River from the Pacific at Astoria. I mentioned before the beach I go to occasionally. It is really interesting to be on the beach or in the water when one of the giant cargo ships goes by. I especially like the car ships. Portland is one of the major ports on the west coast for foreign car entry.
That "crane" is an articulated belt conveyor. It swings over the side of the ship onto the dock when in port. Stuff gets dumped onto the conveyor's dock end and a second set of conveyors (that you can't see unless you are on the ship's deck) distribute whatever the stuff is to the ship's holds.
My guess is that it just came from San Felipe with a load of salt. Or it could be a load of cemento.
