Raise your hand if you have never heard the song "Hotel California" by The Eagles. Ok, you both are excused from reading this entry today. But for the rest of you, read away!
"Hotel California" has got to be one of my favorite songs. Not #1 for me, but maybe in the top 10. I think it is excellently crafted and delivered with lyrics that are incredibly deep. The only other person (in my opinion) who writes lyrics better is Meatloaf.
While in Baja California Sur recently, we had the chance to visit the hotel that was supposedly the inspiration for the song. It is located in Todos Santos on the Pacific side. Nobody knows if this is just legend or truth. The Eagles have never denied or confirmed the story.
The lobby is a bit overdone and very much kitsch. The rest of the hotel was the same. We went there for breakfast with the intention of getting some photos. All of the public rooms were so dark it was impossible to get a good photo. This is the only one that turned out even halfway decently.
Once in the open garden inner courtyard restaurant, if you turn around and look back towards the street, this is what you see on the roof.
Our waiter said these figures on the roof are supposed to represent The Eagles. Looks more like Mexican mariachi singers to me. I don't remember The Eagles ever using an accordian!
If you ever get the chance, stop by. Even if the legend is just a legend, it's worth a look see.
