Some Selections

I have a lot more pictures of the county fair, but I'm sure most of you are getting sick of looking at them. After today, I'll just keep the rest for my own enjoyment.

Like one of my readers commented, lots of fairs have just gone downhill. I think with the urbanization of America and the Walmart mentality, most people are just not into seeing or participating in agriculture or the country way of life. What a pity.

There were a lot of turkey entries but, for some reason, they were not housed in with the rest of the poultry. Lots of strutting toms. I don't know what that mark is on his chest. Looks like a bullet hole though. Maybe a birth mark?





Good thing they are so tasty because they sure are ugly!





Who doesn't love a little bunny?

Chickens, while being one of the dumbest birds ever created, sure can be interesting. It always amazes me to see all the varieties.

Talk about a bad hair day!

It was a hot week, that first one of August. I'm sure the fair exhibitors quickly grew tired of the heat and humidity inside the barn. Or maybe they just had secrets to share. And what better place to do it?

Horseing Around

I'm finally back home in Mexico after six weeks in my hometown in Michigan. I find that I am having to acclimate all over again! It sure is hot here.


There are a few new things about on the island and this week is Mexico's Independence Celebration. I don't hold out much hope for the one here on Isla though. The new Mayor has already announced that the celebration this year will be greatly scaled back due to "budget constraints".

I have to get out and about and start updating some photos, but in the meantime, I am going to continue to post about my trip and experiences in Michigan.

While at the County Fair, which is truly a rinky dink affair, I did get to watch a little of the horse games competition. This is something that is near and dear to my heart.

There were some splendid examples of horseflesh on display.







The first event that I watched is the one that I placed in at the Minnesota State Fair so many years ago. It is pole weaving.

As you will see, these kids did not have much practice at it, but they gave it their best try.

The poor horses though. They had no idea of what was expected of them and really got jerked around.

I also watched a little barrel racing. I did give this a try or two in my day, but I really did not enjoy it. I certainly appreciate the skill that goes into a professional ride though. None of which I witnessed on this day.

Some of the kids took their own sweet time with it. That's ok though. We don't want anybody to get hurt. Just to have a good time is enough.

She may have started slow, but she put the pedal to the medal on her return!

This was the only "hotdogger" in the event. Of course, he was a bit older than the other kids and he won.

I really like this shot, even though it doesn't tell much of a story.

She ended up getting her Appaloosa so over excited, she had to dismount to lead him out of the ring.

As you can see in these next two shots, the fair grounds, and especially the horse ring, have an interesting neighbor.

All in all, it was an enjoyable time spent watching these kids and reliving a bit of my youth while I was at it!
