Revisiting The New Palapa

A few weeks back, I was visiting the beaches to see what, if any, damage Hurricane Paula had done to the shorelines. While at North Beach, I took the opportunity to snap a few updated pictures of the progress of the palapa at Maria del Mar.

This thing is huge. I really like that they left some of the original trees growing inside. Not too sure how they will fare with no sunlight, but they certainly add an interest. **

This is the palm tree they left. Very impressive.

They literally picked up and moved one of the front swing bars to the back to creat this new bar area. I was a little puzzled by the smooth wall behind it.

The view from the above bar looking out to the ocean.

From the shore back to the bar and palapa.

As I was leaving, I noticed this new sign. It may explain the smooth wall behind the bar. I'll have to go back later and check and it out. Certainly an interesting concept, whatever it is.

** see the comment I left about the trees in the Comments section.

I hope the new place draws a crowd! I still say they could help themselves a LOT by just changing a few hotel policies -- like providing complimentary beach loungers to their guests!

I agree about your concern for the sheltered trees ..... I can't see how they'd survive long term....

Now that is odd, to have trees with no sunlight above them. A Cinema that aught to interesting to see what they show on the screen.

I went back to this palapa on Sunday to see if there had been any changes before posting this. There hadn't. But in looking at the trees again, it dawned on me. They are trying to kill them on purpose. The one is an almond tree, considered a nuisance plant here and no big loss. The Palm though is a protected species and they are not allowed to chop it down or move it UNLESS it is dead. Makes perfect sense now why they kept it there.

Really is pretty under that palapa. Wonder how long it will survive in there. The island sure is changing. Everything is becoming bigger and better. Seems like Isla has a little bit of the "Keeping up with the Jones's" syndrome?
