Mowing The Grass The Hard Way

Many years ago, when the construction on the cabana was newly finished, I went to a garden store in Cancun and bought a bag of grass seed. Like when we lived NOB, I wanted to have a nice lawn leading up to the front door.

I spread and raked the seed. I kept it damp for weeks until it germinated. In other words, I lovingly cared for it.

Then came the day when it was finally long enough to mow. But how was I going to do this? It was too small of an area to buy a real lawnmower. And way to big to use garden shears on. Mmm. A traveler worker to my rescue!

A guy stopped by and asked if I wanted him to cut the grass. I negotiated a fair price, showed him how long I wanted it left and left him to it. Really left him to it because I went downtown to run errands. When I returned, I almost cried. Both from sadness and immense anger.

He had done exactly to my precious lawn what you see my neighbor here doing to his.

With exactly the same result.

I went out and bought a weed whip and mow my own grass now.

you should have learned by now. NEVER leave any type of worker alone without supervision.

el oso: I think the first sentence of this post answers your statement very well.

For some reason, my gardener thinks grass is a weed. That may explain the large expanses of gravel in front of my neighbors' homes.

Oh my, glad I have my son to do it! I will remember to do my own lawn when he is gone!

Your lawn in the photos of the cabana looks really nice. Good work!

Don't mean to laugh at your misery, but that's funny! Glad you have the situation under control now with the weed whip! I should do a post on what we do to our grass here in Phoenix once a year. We basically mow it to the dirt and overseed with rye. I could not believe people did that every year when we first moved here. It's because the bermuda, which survives the extreme heat, goes dormant in the winter.

I don't get it. What did the traveler worker do to your lawn? What is your neighbor doing to his lawn??

Yup, the weed whip, Miguel's 'lawn mower', which he only uses on grass at the homes he manages because we no longer have any grass at home. It's an old thing and I'm surprised it even works, but it does, so you can expect many long years of happy weed-whacking on your lawn.

Mike and Cynthia: it is a very common practice in Mexico, especially the rural regions. They use a hand held scythe like knife and cut the grass out by the roots. Leaving only dirt, which discourages scorpions and other unwanteds from getting too close to the house. Or at least they are more easily spotted.

Aye, yi, yi...now I understand. But I can also see from the pics in the previous post that you have very lovely grass now!
