A New Statue

There a couple of new statues on the island. The one I am featuring today has taken the place of the one located at the curve by the Rocamar Hotel. It was a depiction of a reef, complete with various marine life. It was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and has finally been replaced. The previous one was done by a local sculptor, Adrian. Although there is nothing to indicated who made this one, it has all the earmarks of Adrian's work.

I present the statue dedicated to our sea turtles.

This one is complete with a commerative plaque.

These things look so lifelike, I would almost swear they were plastercasts of real turtles.

The malecon wall just behind them has also been painted to commerate and honor the sea turtle. I saw this being painted. It was not done by school children.

Not only is it worth a stop to see this beautiful new piece of art, but the view from here looking east out over the ocean is incredible.

I'm really happy that somebody had the foresight to commission a new piece of work for this spot. The previous statue had lost its' beauty and had become an eyesore. Good work, Isla.

Adrian's works are so well done and meaningful. Am amazed by the numerous improvements accomplished under Alicia Ricalde Magana's administration, and look forward to seeing all "the new" in person.

i dunno. It seems Isla doesnt have the "history", if things get replaced. I vote for restoration of old monuments. And the homes in town, dont tear them down......my dos peso's

I agree the old statue was an eyesore--couln't believe the turtles were missing off of it--this new one is beautiful! On my morning walk I always pass by there at least once, so now something new to see! Also live the malecon decorations!

I like it. Nice and clean looking. Your right that the old statue was getting to be quite the eyesore.

Carl/Debbie: Wholeheartedly agree with you. I love the old, shorter structures too. So glad I took photos of them soon after Hurricane Gilbert (1998)--i.e. Mundaca's tomb before it began to crumble into dust, hacienda Vista Alegre before it was so badly restored, and buildings that probably could no longer be saved after subsequent hurricanes. Today I believe some great "old timers" (Islenos who still have a lot of life left in them) have come to appreciate their fabulous history. And hopefully, they will encourage future planners to realize why tourists enjoy the ambiance of "old" Dolores (el centro's name) and why we flee to Isla from Cancun.

Correction: Sorry, Hurricane Gilbert was in 1988. How swiftly time flies!

That's beautiful! Now if only they would make a few changes to the zocalo and put back the quaint gazebo and an old fashioned fountain that just gurgles all the time without lights and music....

NOTE TO JANE: I have decided to hold on to your comment for a bit. You're stealing my thunder. I am in the works of putting together a tribute to Adrian. I will publish your history in that post, not as a comment. Thanks for sharing!

Oh good! Looking forward to your tribute, with photos I hope -- Adrian certainly deserves that.
