Ouch!

I think I'm going to start keeping one of those mini flashlights next to my bed. Since it seems like I get up at least once a night to go pee, I would probably get a lot of use out of it. I could have used it for sure last Saturday night.

As I sleepily left the bedroom, I happened to jam one of my toes full force into the door jamb. I thought for a moment that I was going to faint from the pain. The whole room lit up but this time with stars. I hobbled on into the bathroom and turned on the light. I was almost afraid to turn on the light. I thought I might have self-amputated my toe and was expecting to see a lot of blood.

When I looked down at it, I saw nothing. I sure felt something but at least there was no blood. My original mission accomplished, I hobbled back to bed and somehow fell back to sleep through all of the throbbing.

Sunday morning I got up to find the index toe (do toes have names?) on my left foot swollen, dark purple and the end of it bent over. It looks to me like I may have broken it at the first knuckle.

I've long heard (and experienced once before) that there is nothing one can do for a broken toe. Just leave it alone and let it heal. Before I haul myself off to the doctor so he can jerk it around and really cause me to faint, does anybody know if it's true that nothing can be done?

Otherwise, I'm needing a little sympathy here!

Wayne, my toes constantly seek heretofore unknown places upon which to whack .... more often that not, it's my little toe, and, yes, it hurts like a m.....f.....!
Equally true is that, at least as the little toe is concerned, unless it's dangling by flesh, there's really nothing you can do.
When it involves larger toes, however, with pronounced joints, it may be a different story. Might be worth checking out.

BTW, of equal concern is the number of times you get up to pee in the night ....as a prostate cancer survivor, I urge you to get that checked out. If there's a problem, this is the best time to nail it.

I've heard the same "nothing can be done." You have my sympathy, BUT have you heard of a NIGHT LIGHT?

I've broken my big toe several times; all they can do is straighten it out and immbolize it with two little sticks of wood and tape it together with your 2nd toe.

What the doctor did when I had a broken toe was to tape the broken one to the toe next to it to stablilize. Kind of like a splint. But you can do that yourself rather than going to the doctor.

I've broken my toe also - was told to tape it to the next toe - can't remember for how long - I think several weeks.

I broke a little toe and taped it myself, having heard the same thing. It healed kind of sideways and makes it harder to wear closed toe shoes on that foot! Darnit. Anyway, I would go to a doctor, just to make sure it gets taped up properly. Good luck!

owie, pobrecito! ice and elevation, get some rest and don't walk around too much.

how about a bed pan? (don't hit me, it's just a joke man, lol!)

Future option - bedpan!

I did that once when I was a kid...and saw the familiar stars. I just thought I bruised it and never went to the doctor, but as I got older I realized I must have broken it because it's been a little bit crooked ever since. I can relate to the pain...boy did that hurt!!

Typically, they are buddy wrapped. The injured toe is taped to the health toe next to it. Your middle toe in this case.

Amigo - I have no medical advice - so here is some sympathy:

Dude, Soooooo sorry about that stubbed toe - it being purple and all - not my favorite color for a body part.

Get well soon.

Juan

Oh Wayne, my stomach was flipping just reading it - I broke two toes the same way....and just fell back on the bed and couldn't move for a few minutes! Now I understand how doing bad things to people's toes can be torture. Yup, the Dr. said to tape the two toes together with a popsickle stick between them - I of course, painted the popsickle stick........fuscia. Hey you gotta laugh a little, huh?
AND, GET A NIGHT LIGHT!

Much sympathy! I am so sorry you broke your poor toes. If it is actually bent you might want to get it looked at anyhow.

Husband breaks toes regularly (it seems) and goes by the philosophy nothing can be done except tape together as mentioned in another comment.

I 2nd the night light comment

Sorry about your lil "piggie" does sound like it is broken. Take a small amt of a cotton ball and place in between the broken toe and the large toe(a cushion for the toes) and place 2 strips of tape around both, thus making a natural split for the broken toe. That is about all that would be done for a broken toe.

Thanks to all for the sympathy (much needed!) and the good advice. Except for the bedpan! I will be taping it and see what happens. But, Babs, I won't be painting anything!

Sympathy? You have it.

Solution? Thought about a catheter? Just asking.

Ouch!! I know how much that hurts and it is overwhelming.

I'd say go to the doctor before too many days because if it heals crooked it will make wearing shoes painful. Why not get the pros opinion anyway?

Lots of sympathy though, take several shots of rum and consider a doctor visit.

Hi, Have I commented on your blog before? Not sure, but anyway. I do enjoy it. But back to the toe. I am always in favor of an x-ray, especially if it is bent. It should be straightened out and a splint applied. You will also want to get one of those lovely shoes to prevent further injury.

I'm a little late getting caught up on blogs and stuff, but taping is the only thing they typically do for broken toes, so everyone already helped you out with that one. What you'll want to do when the break has healed is passive physio to get the toe bending again - using your hands to gently bend the toe until you get it back to normal, otherwise you're going to end up with a stiff toe that will hurt when you walk. I broke my big toe years ago and managed to get it to where it bends when I command it, even it if does crackle a little. I broke the toe just a week before I had to dance onstage - and did it in bare feet with taped toes. It will be fine, I hope - Good luck!
