Saving Antiquity

The Mayor has announced that she has appointed a commission or a panel to initiate returning the island to its' past glory. She, too, feels that the moratorium on buildings over three stories tall has to be enforced again. She also wants an end to all the new high rises. She says they do not capture the spirit or feel of the island. You go Girl!

When she refers to past glory, I wonder if she is talking about buildings like this:

You go girl, but unfortunately, the train already left the station. It's too bad she wasn't there five years ago. Didn't that house just change colors?

I hope she is successful in stopping high-rises and reinforcing the 3-story limit. However, the damage is done with what is already there. Beaches torn up for unfinished projects, wind shifts due to high buildings, blocked views. No, it's not the spirit of Isla - I love those old wooden homes, and even some cabanas out of sticks are quite charming.

LAB: The trouble started under Paulino. Paid to look the other way sort of thing. A big part of the problem is that Mexican law is arbitrary. It is what YOU think it is. Therefore, for awhile now, what we consider the first floor is not counted as such. Therefore, 3 stories is actually 4.

Yes, that is Hemingway's Cantina and it has a fresh, bright coat of paint and is looking good again.

Sue: yes, the damage is done but I applaud the Mayor for wanting to halt it from getting any worse.

Being a Hemingway fan and loving those colors I can only hope your part of Mexico doesn't lose its lively architecture.

I applaund the people who take the time to restore buildings from the past instead of tearing them down.

calypso: so do I, so do I.

anonymous: while the sentiment is great, this building has not been restored. at least not recently. just a fresh coat of paint will do wonders though.

Even though I'm relatively new to Isla, I have some very special photos of old homes which I will always treasure...some of which have been torn down since my first trips. I'm so glad I was able to see some of the old Isla before it's all gone.
