And So It Starts

I can't believe it! The long expected, long delayed, often postponed and much talked about Avenue Hidalgo remodel project is finally under way! As far as I can tell, it started on December 9th. Here's how far along they were on the second day.

For those of you unfamiliar with this street, this is the north end. They will be working their way south, block by block. When I took this picture, they were as far as Fredy's Restaurant.

Looks to me like it is going to be a big mess.

I heard today that they are going to dig the trench, put whatever, wires and stuff, in and then cover it up. Block by block. Then they will go back and start over and rip up the road surface and redo that block by block. We shall see. One hears all kinds of things about this project.

The best part? The crew will stop working on Dec 15 for the holidays and not return to the project until January 16. I wonder how far along they will get in 7 days?

Well you were true to your word yesterday!

WOW - that looks like a huge mess. We arrive the 19th, will be curious to see how they "patch" it for the interim. Looks like an accident waiting to happen for a drunk tourist to stumble into, but it was the same in Playa del Carmen many years ago as well.

We will just have to watch our step on that end of town!

Thanks for the pictures.

Ugh. I wonder if they'll be leaving that first block in a total mess with an open trench from December 15 through January 16? I guess we probably already know the answer to that! (Maybe they won't get beyond Fredy's.)

I'm kind of boggled that they would wait to start this project just before the highest of High seasons...what was wrong with low season?

Hasn't tourism already been suffering in Isla for a while?

Ca't believe they stop working for a month! They'll just be starting back up when we come for a visit! feel badly for the restaurant & shop keepers on Hidalgo--will probably drive some people to places off the main drag.

Glad to hear they are shutting the project down for the Christmas/New Year Holiday. I would probably be the one to fall into the trench!!

It could be worse. They could have torn up the full route and left it open for te entire Christmas season.

If you ask me, it's ALREADY a big mess. We had the same thing happen in Guaymas when the new malecon was built, and I kept running into dead ends trying to find my landlord's office. Que liso!

Well, we will see what kind of a job the do covering the trench up. What a mess it would be when it rains.
