Nightime Visitor

I heard a weird noise on the front porch the other night so I went to investigate.

At first I saw nothing. Then this stuck itself out.

We get crabs in the back patio quite often. They come for the cat food buffet. But never this big.

Why did the crab cross the road?
I don't know, but he's an impressive fellow! Love that second photo.

Wow! Usually the ones I've seen on Isla are much smaller.

Wow, beautiful - yummy crab cakes, crab claws, crab etouffee and a million other great crab dishes! Is someone kidding to ask if they're edible? Heck yes.......

Well, sometimes these things are good for compost and that's about it ... on the other hand, Great Crab is Great Crab ... just want to know the distinction.

commenters: Yes, they are edible, as many of you pointed out. Eating him never crossed my mind though. You should have seen him rear up on his back legs when I tried to catch him. Very impressive. But, thanks to the dust tray with a handle, he is safely in the grass somewhere now. I hope!

Is this one of the blue protected crabs I heard about?

Yikes! That is a big crab. I have seen crabs inside houses. One scared the heck out of a friend who was using the bano at another friend’s house. They move really fast.

BTW, I have been signing as "Robert" which I'm guessing is Ok, but I have to tell you that there is another Robert subsequent to me. So, henceforth, I will be known as Robert The First (gives it kind of a regal stature) .... this could be contracted to "Robert 1st" if it's early and the coffee's not ready yet...

But I'm the guy that asked you, Wayne, originally about how to get this stuff posted, and you suggested going anonymous....... (make sense?)

Robert 1st

Must have been ginormus if you heard him before you saw him.

Alberto, whom we bought our casa from had a little girl about 5 years old at the time. She told Alberto to tell us (she doesn't speak english) that we must promise not to kill the crabs that lived out under the palapa if we were to buy their casa. So far we've kept our promise... but I would have been tempted to eat that one!
