They are seasonal here and available from August to October. They are so pretty I almost hate to cut them open! I've had more than one spoil because of this so now I eat them almost immediately after purchase. They usually cost around 10 pesos or a dollar each.
If you see them in your supermarket, give them a try. You'll be happy you added this to your list of edible fruits.

I almost bought one a couple weeks ago at the grocery store here NOB. When I asked the price .. $5.00 US (for one) .. So I left it in the store! I need to make a trip to our Mexican mercado, I'm sure they are cheaper.
Don't think I've ever seen one here in CT. Will have to look for one....
I love Pitaya. We never found it NOB although at the Farmer's Market in Houston, the Mexican vendors knew what we were talking about. Sometimes we can find it here in SMA. Eat one for me, please.
A favorite! And cut in half, lenghwise, they make a lovely presentation for a cantalope or watermelon and pitaya salad! Delicious.
My new favorite fruit salad is chopped pitaya, sandia, y mango con jugo de naranja dulce. YUM!!!

Sounds great! Will have to try it the next time I'm on Isla.
That's a favorite of mine too. So pretty.
