I'm currently in Michigan. My baby brother has been diagnosed with some serious cancer and the family has gathered. Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be spending the entire day with him as he receives his second chemo treatment.
As if that weren't enough on my plate right now.........
In the continuing saga of THERE IS NO CRIME ON ISLA MUJERES, our house was broken into for the 14th time on Sunday. Got two laptops, a video camera and some loose cash. Including the Project Warm Hearts donations that were sequestered in my bedroom dresser drawer. I thought the place was pretty much impenetrable, but a thief, like a rat, will find a way to enter if they are desparate enough. They broke out one of the back windows and just helped themselves.
The amazing thing is that this occured in broad daylight, sometime between 4pm and 6pm while Bob was running a quick errand. His return home must have scared them away before they could take more. And even more amazingly, the neighbors at Fatso's house were having their usual Sunday Drunken Party in front of their house AND saw nothing nor nobody. Nope, nothing. Mmmmmm.
So, when I get back to the CRIME FREE island late next week, there will be some changes made. Up to and maybe including a for sale sign. I have about had enough.

Bummer, most areas of Mexico that are not "crime free" have beautiful "decorative bars" on the windows.
We NOB dwellers also have these nice decorations and it adds a bit of peace of mind.
So sorry to hear all of this. What a shame. I take it that there were no bars on the windows?
I agree, time for a for sale sign. Enough is enough. Totally insane.
Take care of your brother, I am sure Bob will deal with the rest.
So sorry. It's kind of obvious that someone who had a view of the house and saw B leave did it. Crap crap crap! By the way, you're a wonderful brother.
I love the Caribbean and we enjoy vacationing for a few days on Isla on eaxh trip, but I would encourage the for sale sign.
That is so sorry...to steal all your stuff and nobody saw a thing, while you are away dealing with a family crisis. I am so sorry to read about it and hope things improve for your brother. take care...
Dear Wayne, my heart goes out to you and your family. Keep your spirits up, and your brother's too. I will be sending positive energy your way.
If you do leave Isla, there is always Merida, even if we don't have any lovely beaches.
keep the faith!
regards,
Theresa
Oh Wayne! I'm so sorry, for all of it and that it is all landing on your plate at once. Abrazos amigo,
Oh what an awful thing to occur!
Jeez Wayne! If it weren't for bad luck... what more can go wrong?
It isn't just Isla, it's everywhere but I sure understand your frustration!
Why would you leave two laptops and a camera sitting out? Get a safe, hide them under clothes deep in the closet, do anything but leave them out for a thief to easily grab them. We live in Cozumel and while there's little other crime here, robberies abound.
Wow! Sorry to hear about both.
So sorry amigo - you have had your share of problems there - grrrr.
That absolutely sucks Wayne!! (insert several cuss words here)
OMG, I am so sorry to hear this happened to you and B again. It must have scared the shit out of B to come home to that! Karma will take care of those son of a bitches for doing this, and especially for taking the donations you had gathered for the kids. :(
That just flat-ass sucks. grrrr

Fourteen times would make me say Uncle too. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
And you know we all have your brother in our thoughts.
14 times!!! Wayne, what are you waiting for?? Call your Realtor. Get the hell off of that crime-ridden place you once thought was paradise! Read your blogs -they reflect your discontent with your environment. Enjoy your retirement elsewhere. There are so many wonderful destinations here in Mexico.
So sorry to hear this, Wayne!
First of all, I'm so sorry to hear of your brother's illness. :-(
Secondly, I hate to hear the bad news about your home on Isla. I have often dreamed of someday having a little place there when I retire...but after hearing this....I certainly have cause to think more than twice.

I am sorry to hear about your younger brother. I hope the chemo treatments are the cure, and if not, that there are other options and avenues to pursue. I send my best wishes to you and your family. And strength to your brother.
Now this robbery, man oh man, how much can one take? Maybe it is time to think about Huatulco....and perhaps you can rent the house until the real estate market pickes up...like AFTER hurricane season.
I don't envy you, my friend, this is too much on one's plate. Hang in there.
Is it possible to install some sort of alarm system? Prayers for your brother.
Wow, sorry about your brother. I hope the chemo works and he gets better soon. As for the house, what about installing an alarm system (you can get kits online and install them yourself, that's what we did)? You could get one with sensors, although the cats might set it off. The other option is the beautiful, attractive steel bars accross your windows. What about a nice big German Shepherd trained to kill??? Maybe two? No matter what, it sucks. I'm sorry about your bad luck.
Whoever is ripping you off knows when you aren't home. Does he read your blog? Does he watch your house? Perhaps testing those theories with a hidden accomplice would catch him?
Sorry to hear about your brother--he is lucky to have you there. There was a book awhile back about how humor bolstered the spirit while fighting cancer. The author watched lots of Marx brothers movies and felt stronger. If it doesn't work, at least you shared a laugh.
So sorry to hear about your brother. Damn Cancer ! Also, so sorry that the SOB's have added to your full plate. Have you thought of a camera to a least find out who is trying to push you out?
I can understand if this is the straw that sends you to other digs ....
On the other hand, if you're committed to Isla, it's time to make your place a fortress..... Bars on windows, electric stuff to zap anyone you don't want there ...
Point is, there are extreme steps you can take; depends on what staying there means to you .... and also the rush of Beating The Bad Guys....
O Robert
My thought on the thief is someone is watching you and your home. There are just too many coincidences otherwise.
I am so sorry to hear about your brother. But it is so good that you are in a position to be able to be there to support him through his illness
Prayers going your way for your brother. And I echo anonymous, damn cancer damn it to hell...
Also sorry to hear of your continual frustration with the island. Uncle is right.
So sorry to hear about your brother Wayne. I am sending prayers his way. It is so nice that you are there to support him through this rough spot.
As for this thievery. I agree with the hidden camera idea. It is high time you find out who these crooks are!
I'm so pissed off and sad. I'm so sorry, B and W. I love you, but I do not blame you for wanting to move. Clearly you are being targeted by someone who is watching your comings and goings.
Prayers for your brother.
A pox upon the thief!!!
